Chess is fun! It can be learned quickly and easily. Chess helps improve critical cognitive skills such as concentration, spatial intelligence, and problem solving. Beyond academia, chess influences social behavior including self-esteem, respect for others, patience, and good sportsmanship.
The Berkeley Chess School is a nonprofit organization offering chess instruction from kindergarten through high school since 1982. We are an affiliate of the US Chess Federation. Over the years our students have won many state championships and several have gone on to become National Masters, FIDE Masters, and International Masters. GMs Sam Shankland and Jon Ludwig Hammer were both enrolled in these programs, and went on to be seconds for Magnus Carlsen during his World Championship games!
For students whose proficiency in chess exceeds the after school chess class level, please consider the Berkeley Chess School Friday Night program in San Ramon, where we have 7 levels and conduct a rated tournament after the class each Friday. See our website for information. The first class in fall 2019 is planned for August 23. It will be posted approximately July 23. We will have several sessions throughout the school year.
Participants must currently be in grades 1 to 5.
Registration starts on 06/04/2019 and ends on 11/15/2019.
