Students must be at least five years old, up to 6th grade.This class is intended to teach the basics of chess to allow new students to prepare for the Intermediate 1 class.Studies have found that chess helps improve test results in reading, science, and math, and produces growth in critical cognitive skills. Beyond academia, chess influences social behavior including self esteem, respect for others, patience, and good sportsmanship. And did we mention: it’s FUN!
Classes are held at The Berkeley Adult School, 1701 San Pablo Avenue, Berkeley, 94702. *Please
note that the front of the school will be locked. You will have to go
around to the back of the building and enter through the parking lot off
of Curtis Street.
For the beginner class, students must begin on the first day of the session. No one can join after October 26 for the fall 2 session (unless they took a previous Friday Night Beginner class).
Participants must currently be 5 to 12 years old.
